First Day Home

Things have gone really well so far at home. I remember when I first brought Chance home I completely had a meltdown feeling overwhelmed. He didn't sleep AT ALL and nursing just wasn't working. I was up all night with him just blubbering. Well, nursing still isn't great...forgive me for those reading thing and don't want all the gory details of breastfeeding. My nipples are cracking and it KILLS to nurse. I seriously can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I had 2 nurses look at the "latching on" and they both said it looked great. So, I don't know. It's depressing and I hate it, but I'm trying to forge ahead despite the excrutiating pain because I know it's best for her. Anyway, I won't go into any more details, but any advice from successful breastfeeding moms would be appreciated! I have to take her in on Monday because she has lot a bit more weight than the pediatrician would like, so hopefully they will tell me she is ok.

Other than that though, Sophie has been easy...ha, ha. I'm sure I've got it coming to me. She slept from 11:30-2:30 when I had to wake her up to eat. She didn't eat much because she was so sleepy, so I fed her again at 4:30 and she went back to sleep until 7:00. I'm still exhausted, but I can't complain. She's a pretty sleepy baby. I remember Chance being quite a bit more awake, but I'll take it. Although she does take a binky, she's not ADDICTED to it the way Chance was. She will actually fall asleep w/o it and stay asleep. Chance HAD TO have it in 24/7.

Sophie, Daddy, Chance enjoying a show together.

A rare moment awake!

Chance has been pretty good so far. He has only held her this one time, but giggled the whole time. He's been softly rubbing her hair and trying to help with the binky, but other than that, he's still just a two year old interested in his own thing. Nursing is a little tricky w/ him around because he just wants to climb all over me, but I'm sure we'll figure it all out.

Congratulations on your new baby! That's so exciting. I'm sorry to hear you're having a hard time with nursing. I'm not an expert, but since you asked, I'll offer a little advice. Addy's mouth was perfect on the top, but her bottom lip was curled under. You could check that out, the nurses might have missed that. Also, I found a product that helped me through the first couple weeks. You might just have sensitive skin and it needs time to get to used to things. I used Soothies Gel Pads. I found them at Walgreens. Here is a link so you know what I'm talking about http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100371&id=prod380209. You put them in the fridge and then after nursing put them in your bra. It helped me a lot!

congrats on sophie! she is beautiful!!!! i hear you on the whole nursing thing, i don't have a ton of pain but elsie is not really very good at it. she would rather eat her hand than latch on. maybe we'll see you at the doctor's office on monday (if you still see dr later).

So I was spying on you blog(as I do on everyones in the ward) and saw your post. Have you tried using any nipple shields? I used them with Nadia because I was having problems nursing her. They were life savers. My sister loves them too and used them for her kids. The ones we used were the Advent ones. If you want I could bring some by???? Let me know.

I'm so impressed that you're blogging! It's fun to see pictures of Sophie. I hope the nursing gets better for you. I honestly think that's just how it is in the beginning. I like nursing, but it's painful at first. I think after about two and a half to three weeks it was pain free. I know that's not what you want to hear now though. Just hang in there! Lanolin cream helped soothe me and helped to heal any cracks. I'll give you a call in a week or two after things have calmed down. I'm excited for you guys!

Do you think that she has nipple confusion with the binky? You may decide the pros of binky are too much to let go, but it may be helpful to nix the binky until she gets the hang of things. I hope it works out for you! Cracked nipples are the pits.

Slather, slather, slather that Lanolin cream on after every single session. It's the only way.

I love that baby girl! It was so fun to come see you guys yesterday. SO FUN! I just had fun being with all of you.

I am glad things are going good for you. She is such a doll baby. Braden said he wants to go back and play with Chance.

She's a doll! I love her hair--I wonder if it will stay dark. I have to say ditto to all the comments about lanolin (Lansinoh brand). It completely turned things around for me--use it like crazy!

Oh my gosh, Sophie is just BEAUTIFUL! I can't believe the dark hair! Love it!

Hope things are still going well, and that you are getting some sleep!

I wish I had some nursing advice...I had a really hard time too, but luckily I didn't have much pain. Good luck!

Congratulations. Sophie is simply beautiful...and you know we love the name. I am SO jealous you can hold and cuddle her and have her at home. I am going crazy not having my baby yet...seriously...I am a total hormonal wreck. No one wants to be around me. I especially don't want to be around myself. I am trying every "natural" labor induction method to get her out. I think that I must have been spoiled having a baby come three weeks early last time and this time she will just hang out inside of me past her due date. ARRRG. Good luck with the nursing. I will send you happy, healing nipple thoughts.
